USB Power Plug – INCREDIBLE

Ok – I know this is not really getting back to basics.  But I’m sure you can feel my pain when you need to charge your Kindle and you can only do it by plugging into a USB port.  (unless I spend more money buying an ac adapter)

I know, I know – I have to buy this…. but I can use it for lots of things.  Very excited can’t wait to get mine.

Fish Oil: The Ultimate “Brain” Food

Most of us are familiar with the overwhelming evidence regarding the benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, aka fish oil, for cardiovascular health. But a growing body of research supports the beneficial role of omega-3s in healthy brain aging.

In a landmark study published in the scientific journal, Neurology, elderly people with healthier dietary patterns, including higher intakes of omega-3 essential fatty acids and vitamins C, D, E, and the B vitamins and lower intakes of trans fats, were less likely to have brain shrinkage associated with Alzheimer’s disease than people whose diets were not high in these nutrients. Furthermore, those with healthier diets scored higher on mental thinking and memory tests.1

Where many studies have relied on qualitative evidence from surveys and questionnaires, this study is notable for also measuring nutrient biomarkers in the blood. For the thinking and memory scores, the nutrient biomarkers accounted for 17 percent of the variation in scores. Other factors such as age, years of education, and high blood pressure account for 46 percent of the variation. For brain volume, the nutrient biomarkers accounted for 37 percent of the variation.

The study was supported by the National Institutes of Health, the National Institute on Aging, the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, and the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, Portland, VA Medical Center.

Not just for seniors

The Neurology study provides valuable substantiation for the benefits of omega-3 essential fatty acids for older brains. But what about other age groups? Are omega-3s beneficial for younger brains too?

Quite possibly. In a study conducted at Northumbria University and published in the Biological Psychology, supplementation over twelve weeks with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the omega-3 primarily found in brain tissue, increased blood flow to the brain during mental activity and impact certain aspects of mental performance in young adults.2

The researchers suggest that regularly eating oily fish or taking omega-3 supplements earlier in life may have implications for mental function later on in life.

Winter is Coming…..What do I do?

What are some of the things that we need to do to prepare for Winter?

I can tell you what I am doing and would love to hear your comments.

1.  I’m checking all the outside faucets.  Did you know that if you leave the water hose hooked up on a faucet that drains back, the suction keeps it from working correctly and it can still freeze…. Take your hoses off and you should be good.  But wrap the ones that don’t drain under the ground.

2.  My Honey Bees – well of course I had to put the reducer in the front slot.  They still have a small opening to get in and out on those beautiful days — but less work to keep the hive at a constant temperature because the wind is not blowing in.

3.  My Chickens – I need  to inspect all of my water containers and make sure they are winter worthy.  I don’t want them freezing and busting and my chickens be without water all day.

4.  My Rabbits – I am putting up plastic all around and under the pens so that wind does not go up under the cages.  Again checking the water containers to make sure they are good.

5.  My Worms – I’m going to move my worm containers into a storage building just to make sure they don’t freeze.  Don’t forget to make sure you keep feeding them through the winter.  You know, out of site, out of mind.

6. My Gardens – I have prepped my gardens with Bloomin Minerals – ready for the spring.

Of course I will still be canning in the winter, but I will can meats.  Like Chicken, Deer, Sausage, Hamburger.

I will also can Greens that are still growing in my gardens, like turnip greens, collards, kale, mustard and more.

Take a little time off and enjoy the winter – you know it will be spring before you can turn around.

Dinner in a Jar

Ok – I bought this book – “Dinner Is In The Jar” by Kathy Clark.

You all know that I mainly cook with Freeze Dried Food because I was sick and tired for throwing away fresh food I had to buy at the grocery store – (if I did not have it in my garden)  Not to mention that I hated the chemicals they sprayed on the fruits and vegetables to control the ripening process.  (So much for “Fresh” Food)

So tonight I made two different recipes -  Chicken Pot Pie and Chessy Chicken Casserole.   Well I didn’t actually make them to eat.  I actually measured everything out and put them in the jars.  You know like you would buy a box casserole, but these are made from freeze dried ingredients with no preservatives and now I can just grab one of the meals and make dinner.

I’m so excited I can’t wait to report back how it turned out.
